A piece I previously made
Artist’s statement:
For this piece I chose to reflect on urbanization. Urbanization refers to an influx of people moving to the suburbs and resulting in growth of organized housing developments. This housing increase results in deforestation, decline of agricultural areas, and the overall disruption of nature. In order to show this process in an artistic piece I took a large, round glass vase and layered it to show the past lives of the land before being overcome with housing developments. The first layers consist of clay and dirt and grass. I also included small pieces of wood to suggest chopped down trees. The next layers represent a cornfield that suggests an agricultural piece of land. The top layer is a small neighborhood made out of clear plexiglass houses to represent the transparency of the housing market. I feel that this piece is important because society today does not consider the effects of the instant gratification people long for.
