Kaleidoscope

Artist’s Statement:

This assignment required the use of two of the senses, hearing and seeing. Almost immediately I knew i wanted to create a kaleidoscope influenced piece. The structure is made up of cardboard, mirrors, and colored glass. The pieces of broken colored glass at the end of the kaleidoscope reflect off of the mirrors to create the classic kaleidoscope effect. When the tube is spun the pieces of glass shift changing the colors and patterns seen inside. To fulfill the listen requirement I found cardboard hat boxes that I filled with different materials to create sound when spun around the main tube. The piece is meant to remind one of the beach or nature in general and the phenomenon of light.
