Risk and Response: Artist’s Statement

For this sculpture I was challenged with the task of creating a structure using only a few recyclable materials in a new and interesting way. We were not allowed to plan out what the structure would be, we were only allowed to pick a few materials and find inspiration from other artists work. I was inspired by all of the above artists to attempt the process of weaving. I gathered as many diverse plastic bags i could get, stripped them, tied them together, and began to weave them on my arms creating interesting and dynamic blanket like sheets that i then hand wove together like patch work. Finally I took the finished sheet of woven plastic bags and hung it with wire from the ceiling. To make the piece more dynamic I twisted it around itself and photographed it in several different positions to show its diversity. The piece in my opinion is deceptively intricate and full of detail.
